This coat of arms was given to Gibraltar by Isabella I of Castile.
After the territory was passed back to the Spanish Crown in 1501, the queen issued a Royal Warrant granting Gibraltar the coat of arms and motto montis insignia calpe, which are still in use today, 5 centuries later.
